Job description

We are seeking an experienced Technical Product Owner to help lead the continued development and enhancement of an established digital marketplace platform serving the eye care industry. The Marketplace connects eye care practices, patients, and third-party partners through an integrated e-commerce ecosystem. The platform supports a broad range of commerce capabilities, including product catalogs, pricing, inventory, ordering, fulfillment, vendor integrations, and the underlying platform services that enable these experiences. This role sits at the intersection of product strategy, e-commerce, business operations, customer experience, and software delivery. You will work closely with product leadership, business stakeholders, engineering, architecture, UX/UI, QA, and external partners to understand Marketplace needs, establish priorities, define requirements, and guide functionality from discovery through release. This is a hands-on product ownership role rather than a project coordination position. Success requires strong product judgment, technical aptitude, systems thinking, and the ability to look beyond individual requests to understand the underlying problem and develop scalable solutions. What You Will Do You will own and prioritize product work for the Marketplace and help ensure development teams are focused on delivering high-value, scalable platform capabilities. • Own, maintain, and prioritize the Marketplace product backlog based on customer impact, business value, technical feasibility, scalability, risk, dependencies, and operational needs. • Partner with product leadership and business stakeholders to understand Marketplace opportunities, customer and partner needs, business objectives, and desired outcomes. • Lead discovery and requirements definition for marketplace capabilities such as catalog, pricing, inventory, order management, fulfillment, and partner integrations. • Translate business, customer, partner, and operational needs into clear epics, features, user stories, acceptance criteria, workflows, and development-ready requirements. • Maintain sufficient backlog readiness to support effective sprint planning and continuous software delivery. • Serve as a day-to-day product partner to engineering and architecture, providing timely decisions, clarifying requirements, and helping resolve dependencies and trade-offs. • Develop a strong understanding of Marketplace functionality, business rules, system interactions, APIs, integrations, data flows, and technical dependencies. • Work closely with engineering and architecture to evaluate solution approaches and ensure capabilities are scalable, reliable, and aligned with the broader platform. • Partner with UX/UI and research resources to incorporate customer insights, usability findings, and business needs into end-to-end product experiences. • Define requirements for integrations with vendors and external systems, including APIs, data exchanges, synchronization, error handling, and expected system behaviors. • Identify edge cases, dependencies, and downstream impacts across users, workflows, integrations, and business rules. • Evaluate requested functionality against customer value, business priorities, technical complexity, existing platform capabilities, and long-term scalability. • Lead backlog refinement and actively participate throughout sprint planning, development, testing, demonstrations, and release. • Partner with engineering and QA to ensure requirements and acceptance criteria are understood, testable, and successfully delivered. • Review delivered functionality and validate that it meets defined requirements and intended business outcomes. • Use product data, operational metrics, stakeholder feedback, and customer behavior to evaluate outcomes and identify opportunities for continued improvement. • Clearly communicate product priorities, decisions, trade-offs, requirements, risks, and dependencies to technical and non-technical stakeholders. • Maintain clear documentation of product requirements, decisions, research findings, and other information needed to support effective delivery and long-term platform knowledge. What We Are Looking For Candidates should have 6+ years of experience in Product Management, Product Ownership, or a closely related software product role, with meaningful responsibility for defining, prioritizing, and delivering software functionality. We are looking for someone who combines strong e-commerce or marketplace experience with the technical aptitude and product judgment necessary to own complex platform capabilities. • Strong experience owning and prioritizing software product backlogs and working directly with software development teams. • Experience owning platform, backend, or systems-focused products within an e-commerce, marketplace, SaaS, or other transaction-oriented environment. • Strong understanding of e-commerce and marketplace models, particularly capabilities such as catalog, pricing, inventory, order management, fulfillment, and partner ecosystems. • Demonstrated ability to translate business and user needs into clear technical requirements, epics, user stories, acceptance criteria, and workflows. • Strong systems-thinking skills and the ability to understand complex workflows, APIs, integrations, data flows, and dependencies across platforms and vendors. • Experience working directly with software engineering, architecture, QA, UX/UI, operations, and business stakeholders. • Strong understanding of Agile software development practices, including backlog refinement, sprint planning, development, testing, release planning, and product demonstrations. • Experience working with third-party integrations, external technology partners, and API-based systems. • Ability to identify root causes and develop scalable platform solutions rather than relying on tactical or one-off fixes. • Strong product judgment and the ability to balance customer and business value with technical feasibility, scalability, reliability, risk, and operational considerations. • Experience using product, customer, or operational data to prioritize work and evaluate outcomes. • Understanding of the software development lifecycle and modern cloud-based application architectures. • Ability to make decisions, resolve ambiguity, evaluate trade-offs, and keep development teams moving efficiently. • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and prioritization skills. • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, including the ability to explain complex topics and decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences. • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of a distributed international team. Valuable Experience • Multi-vendor or multi-sided marketplace platforms. • E-commerce platforms and digital storefronts. • Composable commerce platforms such as commercetools, Shopify, Magento, or similar technologies. • Product catalog and product information management. • Pricing and inventory management. • Order management and fulfillment. • Third-party vendor and API integrations. • Payment and transaction-oriented platforms. • External vendor or technology partner management. • Reporting, analytics, and product or operational metrics. • Event-driven architecture, microservices, or API-first platform design. • Healthcare technology, digital health, eye care, optical, retail, or other consumer digital products. Healthcare or vision-care experience is beneficial but not required. Strong e-commerce or marketplace product experience, technical aptitude, and demonstrated software product ownership are more important for this position. These priorities track closely with the attached profile, where healthcare is preferred rather than required and marketplace/platform experience is part of the minimum qualifications. Distributed Team Collaboration This role works with a distributed development team. Candidates should be comfortable working in an international, remote environment and maintaining reasonable working-hour overlap with team members and stakeholders across multiple time zones. The position provides flexibility in working hours; however, candidates must be willing to adjust their schedule when necessary to participate in important team ceremonies, stakeholder discussions, planning sessions, and other collaborative activities with US-based stakeholders. Engagement Structure This is a remote B2B / independent contractor engagement with a U.S.-based technology consulting firm. The successful candidate will work as an integrated member of the delivery team supporting an established digital marketplace platform. Candidates must be able to contract legally through an appropriate individual or business entity in their country of residence and be able to receive payment for services from a U.S.-based company.
